Greenwich Meridian

Two adjacent telescopes are held in these buildings, where the nearest superseded the one to the right (the Bradley Telescope) thus shifting the Greenwich Meridian 19 feet to the East (see inscription below). Not quite sure why I like this story so much, but it accompanies my pleasure in time zone maps. Both open up from front to back along the north – south view of the telescope.

Instrument Seven

Instrument Seven

Most of the views I have posted of the instruments are from the side – here is Instrument Seven from above. The round yellow piece is a spirit level. The transparent surface seen below and behind the picture plane is a protractor that accepts a weighted string when aligning instruments to throw paint at each other.

Very busy at the moment – here is a plaster cast from the Ashmolean to tide over the blog.

Usual procedure to view in 3D – go cross-eyed until you can resolve the images over each other – you will see three images, concentrate on the middle one. Try to relax and the three dimensional image will find its depth. THis one works quite well, so it is worth persevering.
