Mathematical Tiles were a form of cladding, usually for timber framed buildings, used from the mid eighteenth century into the early part of the nineteenth century in south east England. The glazed black variety are more particular to the Brighton area – this example is in Ditchling on a house that is under renovation.

We are working on a site with a rifle range and came across these targets with colour matching patches to cover the holes so they can be reused. Some quite delicious collages as a consequence, although the person patching the last image clearly had an iconoclastic bent.
