Stereo Submarine

Stereo Submarine

The stereoscopic view of the submarine interior above is very similar to the one that revealed the possibility of making paradoxical shadows that float in mid air – the earlier version was a portrait frame but these are landscape and have a sharper floating shadow. Go cross-eyed so that similar elements int he photographs register with each other and then relax until the full three dimensional image resolves itself. Then look just below the periscope handle for the floating shadow.

The top image is of Instrument Six that makes such floating shadows, both photographically and in real time (as shown here, working with candles for a light source).

Optical Bench

In terms of structuring ideas the optical bench lies between the ubiquity of scaffolding and the specificity of the armatures that hold dinosaur skeletons or the dynamic frames of planetary models (for example). They are content specific but allow that content to be played with.

The active pieces in the lower image are mute without the bench, which brings them into a negotiable relationship.

VAB

VAB

The VAB at Cape Canaveral is large. The side bays seen above in stereo have platforms to fit the lower stages of the Saturn Five rocket. We are still in the lower part of the building. From the outside (below) you cannot calibrate the scale, and it is hard to do so inside despite markers such as stairs and railings.
