Pioneer Village Museum, Beausejour

A couple of views in the Beausejour Pioneer Village Museum in rural Manitoba. The selection, accumulation and process of classification in such places is most endearing, with a mixture of contingency and obsession forming parallel logics to the conventions of material taxonomies. Also the location of one of the most awkward, funny and tragic situations I have experienced.

Houses in Winnipeg

On the outskirts of Winnipeg, and I imagine in many North American cities, there are house shops with a collection of brand new houses ready to truck to the buyer’s site. They stand on stacks of wood ready to be moved. When the rollerskating rink closed on Portage close to Downtown these houses resembled a second hand house shop. In fact they were being taken from the site (in 2007) to be reused elsewhere. They look like standard pattern book houses but apparently required quite a few adaptations to their new location due to context specific aspects such as rights of light and overlooking. Note the truck wheels already under the houses ready for their move.

Titan Missile Base, Tucson

I like these trailers at the Titan Missile Base south of Tucson. There used to be a trailer with hinged wheels at the front at Orford Ness that was even nicer, perhaps of a similar vintage. Quite a lot of contractors in Winnipeg use semi/ articulated lorry trailers as site huts. This one would work very well as a control room for the Bird Automata Test Track.

Here is the reverse view of Instrument Eight. The instruments are built out of aluminium this time, which makes them much more robust. You might notice quite a few differences on the front side from the previous instruments.
